Crowns
What are Dental Crowns?
Crowns are restorations, often used to treat teeth that are badly broken down or have cracked, but part of the natural tooth remains. Crowns protect teeth by “capping” or covering them completely. Your natural tooth requires a little preparation to ensure the right fit before we cement the permanent crown into place.
These restorations provide optimally shaped and sized teeth that restore a tooth’s function and appearance. Crowns can provide excellent aesthetic restoration protection for weak or damaged teeth.
Who Should Get Dental Crowns?
Crowns help restore teeth that have already had a root canal treatment and might be brittle or likely to fracture. We also use crowns to repair teeth affected by excessive grinding, an unbalanced bite, large fillings, or inadequate oral hygiene.
Benefits of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are a popular restorative dental treatment among patients for various reasons. As such, crowns can provide a wide range of benefits to patients.
Increase Tooth Integrity
The dental crowns we provide for patients are made of strong, durable materials that can withstand the everyday wear and tear involved with chewing and biting. By getting crowns, patients can strengthen the structural integrity of their teeth, enabling them to enjoy specific foods again. Weakened or cracked teeth can cause surrounding teeth to be compromised – crowns help improve the strength of the area as a whole.
Protect Damaged Teeth
Cracked, worn, or otherwise compromised teeth can be a liability in the mouth. Not only can they break, but they can cause additional damage to surrounding teeth. By having dental crown treatment, you offer your teeth and gums extra strength and support.
Preserve Natural Tooth Structure
Keeping existing teeth in place is always the first goal for our dental team. Will will explore other options when absolutely necessary. As an early treatment step, crowns preserve as much of the natural tooth as possible rather than requiring more extensive treatments, such as extractions and dental implants.
Improved Appearance
Teeth that are discoloured, misshapen, uneven, cracked, or broken can be unsightly. In some cases, these damaged teeth can present difficulties or issues for oral health. Crowns can improve the appearance and integrity of such teeth, restoring a natural and healthy look.
Improved Function
Crowns help improve the function of damaged teeth. Since teeth are integral to chewing, biting, and eating, the benefit of crowns cannot be overlooked. Food is a wonderful part of life and celebrations, and enjoying meals with friends and loved ones is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Crowns can help patients return to enjoying meals thanks to improved tooth function.
Support for Bridges and Dentures
Securing bridges and dentures is a significant benefit of dental crowns. The stability of such dental devices is critical for them to work correctly. Crowns help anchor other restorations to the teeth for confident speaking and eating without slips, clicks, and other inconveniences from ill-fitting restorations.
Long-Lasting Results
Dental crowns can last up to 15 years or more with proper care. Patients can enjoy the benefits of crowns for well over a decade, making this type of dental treatment a more cost-effective option than other types of restorative treatments down the road.
Reduced Sensitivity
Sensitivity can be a major issue with teeth. Crowns can help reduce pain and discomfort in teeth frequently exposed to hot and cold temperatures.
Customised Dental Crowns
Dental Crown Treatment at our Wokingham, Berkshire Practice
Dental crowns are a standard treatment at our UK dental practice. From start to finish, here is what you can expect from your dental crown treatment at smile2o:
- Exam and Consultation: We conduct a thorough exam and consultation with you, examining your teeth and gums to determine if a dental crown is the best treatment option for you. We will also recommend any other treatments that may resolve your dental issue.
- Preparation: Next, we prepare your tooth to support the crown. This step typically involves removing a small amount of tooth structure to make room for the crown. We will also take an impression or scan of your tooth to create your custom-made crown.
- Temporary Crown: We may place a temporary crown over the prepared tooth to protect it until your permanent crown is ready.
- Permanent Crown: Once we have your permanent crown, you return to our practice, where we will fit it over the prepared tooth and make any adjustments for proper fit and bite. If the crown meets our high standards and you are happy with it, we use a special cement to hold it in place.
- Follow-up Visit: After we place the permanent crown, you will need to return to the dentist for a follow-up visit to ensure it fits correctly and that you are comfortable with it.
- Aftercare: You must take good care of the crown following treatment, including maintaining good oral hygiene and avoiding hard and sticky foods.
